C of I News briefs - Dec 4

C of I  chair for UK and Ireland children's ministry group
Peter Hamill, training co-ordinator for Connor Diocese, has been elected to a three year term as moderator of the principal networking group for children’s ministry in Great Britain and Ireland.

CGMC - the Consultative Group on Ministry to Children - brings together representatives from the Church of England, United Reformed Church, Methodist Church, Scripture Union, Bible Reading Fellowship, Church in Wales, Salvation Army, Moravian Church, Church of Ireland, Church Lads and Girls Brigade, Girls Brigade, and Assemblies of God.

CGMC also has a very creditable track record in milestone publications such as : The Child and the Church Report, and Understanding Christian nurture. The group also co-ordinated work relating to the introduction of child protection measures in the member churches and organisations, and published a major report to the churches. “Time for Action” on adult abuse. The group also has enabled several curriculum publications and programmes.

Recently CGMC met again  in Belfast where members visited Stormont and met the Children’s Commissioner for NI, Patricia Lewesley,.The group debated the role of children’s ministry in the formation training for ordained ministry. This was hosted in Edgehill College and the Rev Dr Maurice Elliott, Director of Church of Ireland Theological Institute, and the Rev Janet Unsworth, Director of Studies at Edgehill College also took part.

Book launch
After the morning eucharist in Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin there will be a launch of a new book by Dr Margret Daly-Denton, a member of the cathedrals’ worshipping community. Psalm-Shaped Prayerfulness. A Guide to the Christian Reception of the Psalms will be launched by the Revd Dr John Bartlett, a noted Old Testament scholar and former Principal of the Church of Ireland Theological College.

Lutheran Focus
On Tuesday 7, Budget Day in the Republic, congregations in the greater Leeson Street area from five denominations are invited to a short ecumenical lunchtime prayer at 1pm in St. Finian's Lutheran Church in Adelaide Road. There will be the opportunity to share lunch together afterwards in the adjoining "Lutherhaus" at 24, Adelaide Road. The prayer will be co-ordinated by Sr. Nora Downey of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Haddington Road.

Inter-Religious Council
On Thursday morning, Dec 9, the Archbishop of Dublin will attend the launch of the Inter-Religious Council at Archbishop’s House, Drumcomdra.
