PRAYERS FOR RIR IN AFGHANISTAN

Church members in the Royal Irish Regiment ,1st Battalion, including some from the 2nd Battalion (Territorial Army in Northern Ireland) will deploy this month to Afghanistan for a 6 month tour of duty.

The Commanding Officer is Lt Colonel Colin Weir who is from Portadown. Speaking at Tern Hill, the Regiment’s base in England, Colonel Weir told the first wave of departing troops to behave properly. He said, “You will want to look back on this deployment with a clear conscience. I simply expect you to do the right thing. We all need to understand that we all have the capacity as individuals, to do great things for the Afghan people but equally by doing the wrong thing we can damage the effort.” He added, “We cannot protect the people from the terror of the Taliban without tackling the enemy... This is war. It is not meant to be easy”.

'Prayers for Our Troops' will be held in St Anne's Cathedral, Belfast, in the Royal Irish Chapel, and in St Patrick's Cathedral, Armagh, also in the Royal Irish Chapel.

Ashort service of prayer lasting for 30 minutes, will be conducted in St Anne's on the 1st and 3rd Fridays of the month and on the 2nd and 4th Fridays in Armagh. This is the schedule right through to Christmas with the thought of continuing in the new year.
