POPE TARGETS FAITH RENEWAL IN WEST

Pope Benedict XVI has founded a new institution to counter secularisation in Europe and Western nations.

The Pontifical Council for Promoting New Evangelization was launched at a press conference in Rome. The council aims to promote Catholic teaching, better utilise the media to spread the Gospel, and to instigate evangelistic activities. The head of the new office, Archbishop Salvatore Fisichella, said the ‘eclipse of God’ in the West had long been of concern to Benedict. Commenting on the departure of Europe from its Christian roots, the Pope wrote in his decree: ‘While some greeted this as a freedom, they soon realised the interior desert that is born when man — thinking himself the architect of his own nature and destiny — finds himself lacking that which is fundamental to everything.’
