‘SEARCH’ HIGLIGHTS ANGLICAN COVENANT

A new issue of the Church of Ireland journal, Search, edited by the Revd Dr Virginia Kennerley, is now available. Decision time for the Anglican Covenant is imminent. Next month the Church of England General Synod will vote on the matter and the Church of Ireland will vote next May.
Whichever way the decision goes there will be serious results and in an effort to stimulate serious debate on the matter, especially among those who will vote on it in May, Search is running an article against the Covenant by Jonathan Clatworthy, General Secretary of the Modern Church, in this issue, to be followed by one by Archbishop John Neill in favour in the next. It is also hoped to run a colloquium in TCD in March to consider the way forward.

This issue also includes articles on inter-faith dialogue and its relationship to Christian witness. Jeff Bailey, from the Centre for Social Justice in London, offers an account of the practice of scriptural reasoning, in which members of the three Abrahamic faiths gather together to share insights into their scriptures, in such away that mutual understanding and respect is fostered. In the same area, Professor Linda Hogan, of the ISE, writes of new developments in the School in the area of inter-cultural as well as inter-faith encounter – a crucial distinction in our world today.

Closer to home, Dr Anne Lodge, Principal of CICE, and the Very Revd Dermot Dunne, Dean of Christ Church, share some research on the experience and influence of Roman Catholic converts in the Church of Ireland, while the Revd Livingstone Thompson outlines the challenge to the Irish churches of the growing migrant-led Pentecostal churches, chiefly those of African origin. The Revd Donald Ker, last year’s president of the Methodist Church in Ireland, outlines recent progress in agreement between Methodists and the Church of Ireland on the interchangeability of ministries – another subject for consideration at General Synod and the Methodist Conference.
