The faith of many of the Chilean miners dramatically rescued this week was personified in the second to emerge from the ground, Mario Sepulveda.
He told reporters: ‘I never had a doubt. I always believed in the professionals, I always had faith in God.’ Later, he explained the spiritual crisis he had experienced underground: ‘I was with God and I was with the devil. They were fighting over me and God won. I grabbed onto the best hand. I held onto it and never thought for one minute that God wouldn’t get me out of there.’ The 17th miner to escape, Omar Reygadas, knelt on the ground, clutching a Bible, after he left the capsule. The 24th, evangelical preacher Jose Henriquez, kept his colleagues’ spirits up during their 69-day ordeal.
